Brief description of the city
“I come to Leipzig, the place one can see the whole world in one.” – Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
Leipzig is a city of Northwest Saxony with approximately 516,000 inhabitants. The commercial centre is home to the University of Leipzig, the Leipzig Fair and seat of leading businesses such as BMW, Porsche, DHL, Amazon and the Verbundnetz Gas AG.
Furthermore, Leipzig is a remarkably green city. In addition to a vast landscape of lakes, which resulted from restoration of old open-cast mines and numerous parks, the city still has another rarity: Right through Leipzig runs one of the largest floodplain forest areas of Central Europe (2500 ha). The close proximity to the park and forest areas not only creates the conditions for a variety of sports and leisure opportunities, but also the generous chance to switch in a very short time between the turbulent city life and green recreation areas.
The 1989 peaceful democratic movement, decisive to overcome the communist dictatorship in East Germany, originated in Leipzig and earned the city and its inhabitants a heroic status that defines Leipzig’s worldwide reputation ever since.

In addition to Leipzig’s great musical tradition that includes the workings of Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the Gewandhaus orchestra and the Thomanerchor (choir), the city is well-known for the creative endeavours of its inhabitants, artists and cultural promoters. Examples are initiatives as the "Pop up)" independent music fair, the galleries at the location of the former cotton mill, the "Designers’ Open", the "F/stop" photography festival and many more, that have already started to attract broader attention and have led to a vibrant local creative scene.
